Mailing lists Basics
(abstract from "ON-LINE MAILING LISTS") Mailing lists are automated e-mail delivery systems. Some mailing lists are designed for one way information delivery, while others encourage a community dialogue to evolve among all members of the mailing list. For more information on a particular mailing list, send a mail message containing the highlighted phrase between the quotations marks on the second line to the address given. Most importantly, learn the commands that control the list server, and make sure you know the difference between the address of your mailing list and the address of the list server! All commands (e.g., "help", "subscribe," and "unsubscribe") go to the list server's address, which will look like one of these:
listserv@somewhere.edu
majordomo@somewhere.edu
listproc@somewhere.edu
However, the actual mail to and from your list--the good stuff--must be sent to a completely different address. Never send a command to that address, because it will probably be forwarded on to dozens or hundreds of people!
