Approaches are Changing Advances in systems and software engineering are occurring at every turn. Yet despite these advances, success in the development and procurement of today's high-technology systems remains elusive. From the notorious baggage handling system at the Denver airport to the "minor glitch" that prevented FTD florists from delivering Mother's Day gifts on time, systems failures continue to plague the industry and disappoint the users. We need more than the occasional victory. Success needs to be an everyday occurrence. You Can Manage Your Risks . . . Or They Can Manage You Successfully developing or procuring complex systems in information technology, enterprise management, or national defense demands anticipation of program risks and the systematic application of best practices. It demands a system view of product, process, and personnel that is focused on anticipating the barriers to success and turning problems into opportunities. It demands risk management. Today's software-dependent enterprises rely on information technology that can provide what you need to know, when you need to know it. There is no place in this fast-paced competitive world for systems that are too costly, late, or broken. Building world-class information technology requires a success-based approach using advanced processes, validated practices, and integrated management techniques. It requires an approach that complements process improvement through problem prevention. Maximize the Likelihood of Successful Enterprises and Programs Throughout government and industry there is heightened awareness of the need to manage risk and improve acquisition practices to maximize the likelihood of success. New initiatives and new technologies are being generated at every turn to deal with the problems and provide solutions. This conference is your way to stay informed about this exciting and rapidly-changing field. Through participation you become "part of the solution." The SEI Conference on Risk Management provides a forum that brings together managers, practitioners, change agents and researchers who are defining and sharpening the leading edge of management practice. This is your opportunity to contribute, as well as increase your awareness and understanding of the most recent advances in policy, process, and technology as they apply to managing for success in software-intensive systems. Managers will learn about best commercial practices and techniques that improve their ability to make informed decisions and to gain better control of their project's cost, schedule, and technical contents. Practitioners will increase their awareness of risks and their ability to avoid or mitigate them. Both buyers and suppliers of high technology systems will gain insight from the experiences of leading experts and professionals, learn about the latest developments and technological advances, and learn what can be done to make success commonplace. The SEI Conference on Risk Management features keynote speakers, distinguished presenters, and panel sessions with experts and professionals dealing with the most pressing problems facing the community. Specially selected hands-on tutorials, birds-of-a feather sessions, and focused workshops will provide opportunities for you to participate and learn, while working with colleagues on common-interest problems. Ample opportunity will be provided for networking with experts and co-professionals. . . . . . Call for Participation Proposals We are seeking proposals for paper presentations and tutorials on topics related to risk management in systems development and acquisition or procurement (government, industry, and commercial). Special consideration will be given to papers and tutorials relating to the theme of the conference: Making Success Commonplace. Acceptance Conditions Upon acceptance, authors will be mailed specifications for final submission of camera-ready and soft-copy materials to be included in the conference proceedings. Authors will need to sign a copyright release form when they submit their final camera-ready materials. Due dates must be met. . . . . . Proposal Specifications Paper Presentations For paper presentations, practical experiences or lessons learned are preferred, but unique research contributions to advancing the practice of risk management or the acquisition/procurement of software intensive systems are welcome. Also especially welcome are papers from commercial endeavors. We will be allocating papers to specific tracks to provide attendees with clear choices in subject matter. These tracks are specified below. Please indicate in your submission to which track your paper belongs. Presenters can select topic areas in risk management or acquisition/procurement of software intensive systems.
