EUNIS 97 European Cooperation in Higher Education Information Systems Grenoble, France, 9-11 September 1997 EUNIS EUNIS is the European University Information Systems Organisation. EUNIS is an international Association under Belgium law which statutes are deposited in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. Membership is open, through National Associations, to those responsible for the management and development of information systems in higher education in Europe. 14 European countries are now members of EUNIS. Information about EUNIS may be found on EUNIS Web server. EUNIS 97 is organised by EUNIS together with CSIESR, Comité des Services Informatiques de l'Enseignement Supérieur et de la Recherche (France). It is intended to bring together managers and staff of computer and other information services in higher education and scientific research institutes and users of information technology in education, research and administration of those institutions to discuss evolving issues and applications of information technology in the academic world. It follows EUNIS 95, the first Congress organised by EUNIS in November 1995 in Düsseldorf, Germany. EUNIS 97 will present both invited and contributed papers either as oral or posters presentations. Parallel sessions may be organized. A commercial exhibition will be organized. TOPICS 1. FROM TEACHING TO LEARNING The role of Information Services in relation with teaching. * New tools for teaching: + Multimedia on local and wide area networks + Internet and the Web * New tools and the student: + Distance Learning and Adult Education + New opportunities for universities * New tools and the teacher 2. NETWORK INFORMATION SERVICES Can we in Europe organise ourselves to present a standard interface to Internet and the Web? * How to organize mirrors at a European level? * Which are the tools for the future (Java, browsers...)? * Issues for security * A united European Access to Internet? + Public domain access + Navigation tools + Convergence of personal computers and workstations + National and European superhighways + The future of Internet 3. DELIVERY OF INFORMATION The networks are changing the way information is accessed and delivered. Universities present their information on the Web... Scientific journals are being published through electronic media, courses are available on the network. This has a large impact in all fields of activities of the Universites. * Libraries and networks * Access to information for the student and the staff * Scientific information on the Internet and its impact on Teaching and Research * Impact of the intranet on communications inside the Universities 4. MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS The network has changed not only the way Administrative Informations Systems are working but also the way they work together with the other bodies of the University (students, teachers and researchers...). * Student systems including the use of plastic cards * Timetabling for modules, examinations... * Executive Information Systems * Office Information Systems * Physical resources/Inventory 5. CHANGING ROLE OF COMPUTER CENTRES Computer Centres have drastically changed. Their role has moved from number crunching to delivery of information and resources. In some places they have been suppressed. What is their future? * Technical support: + Network management + Remote management of user's machines + Helpdesk * Resources delivery: + Software licensing + Accessing databases + Accessing common software * New services: + Coordination of services + Counciling: support to users before buying + Merging services: + Libraries and Information Services 6. HIGHER EDUCATION INFORMATION SYSTEMS IN THE COUNTRIES OF CENTRAL EUROPE AND THE NEW INDEPENDENT STATES * State of the art and projects * Integration into European Structures CALL FOR PAPERS Authors interested in participating to the Congress are invited to submit a one page abstract of their contribution before March 1st 1997. The papers will be reviewed by the Program Committee. Accepted authors will have to write an extended paper (6 to 10 pages) before June 1st 1997. Papers and abstracts will be published on the Web. Papers will also appear in a participant edition of the congress proceedings. Abstracts should be submitted preferably as MS Word, Latex or HTML files through e-mail at: eunis97@lmcp.jussieu.fr. PRACTICAL INFORMATION Grenoble is accessible from most European cities by train (3 hours from Paris by TGV) or by plane (international airports in Geneva and Lyons, one hour from Grenoble). Fees and loadging will cost from 1400 FF up to 2000 FF depending on loadging conditions.
